Financial Support for Occupational Therapy Services

We understand that it can be confusing trying to work out what financial support you can access for Occupational Therapy Services.

There are several different ways to access financial support to cover some or all of your Occupational Therapy (O.T) costs and your local GP or Paediatrician may be able to assist and support you in sourcing several of these.

NDIS Funding

We can provide services to NDIS participants whose funding is Plan Managed or Self Managed. If your funding is currently managed by the NDIA, you will be unable to access our services using your NDIS plan.

Private Health Cover

Check with your individual fund to see if you have ‘Extras’ cover for Occupational Therapy. The fund may reimburse you an amount for an Initial OT consultation and subsequent sessions. There is not a specific code for Occupational Therapy so just enquire about Occupational Therapy rebates.

Medicare Cover

Baobab is an approved provider for 3 different plans under Medicare.

Medicare plans relevant to Occupational Therapy are:

  • Chronic Disease Management Plan - CDMP (formerly an ECP plan)

  • GP Management Plan

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder Plans (ASD)

Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP)

You can ask your GP whether your child would be eligible for an CDMP. Your child maybe eligible if they see another Allied Health professional as well as an OT. It is a document which outlines the suggested Allied Health Care requirements for your child beyond standard GP care. You can use the CDMP plan for 5 individual OT sessions per calendar year and will be rebated a certain amount per visit by Medicare. This amount will increase if you are over the safety net. Item number 10958.

ASD Plan

Clients who are eligible include children with Autism or any other Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). The plan can be issued by a general practitioner or by a specialist (i.e. Paediatrician) or consultant physician. Your child's treatment plan must be in place before their 13th birthday, and the sessions must be used before they turn 15. Up to 20 relevant allied health services are available per lifetime for the client. Item number 82025.

DSS Funding

There is early intervention funding available through the Department of Social Services (DSS) for children 0-7 years old. There are TWO separate streams of this funding:

HCWA - FaHCSIA Funding – Autism
This Early Intervention funding can then be used for Occupational Therapy sessions at Baobab or to purchase specific pieces of equipment that your Occupational Therapist has suggested will be of benefit to your child. This is known as the Helping Children With Autism (HWCA) package.

The package includes:-

  • $12,000 which is available to use for early intervention services and treatments until the child's 7th birthday;

  • Up to a maximum of $6,000 can be used in any one financial year

  • $2,100 can be used for resources in any one financial year.

Families are required to present their Letter of Introduction from their Autism Advisor (Amaze) prior to claiming these services through Baobab.

After each session, families will be required to sign a Service Delivery form indicating that the session has been completed. Families will receive a quarterly statement from DSS regarding their funding balances. More information including how to get in touch with an Autism Advisor for assessment or by calling 1800 778 581 to contact the Helping Children with Autism Inquiry Line.
